These banners are designed to hang from
light poles lining Lakeshore Avenue's commercial district, the lake
shore itself, and Lake Park Avenue to the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, California.
The banners would be changed seasonally, and banners already
existed for the holiday season. I could only use three colors and the
white of the canvas. I decided to use a sepia brown for all line work,
with a blue background for lake or sky. The third color would vary
according to the season.
I decided to use images from Lake Merritt's Bird Sanctuary, which
is the oldest bird sanctuary in the nation, established in 1873.
Located right on the pacific flyway, a large variety of birds either
live here year round or come through the area on a leg of their
migration.
I used the Snowy Egret for Spring, perched among cherry blossoms
with pink as the accent color. I depicted a California Gull for Summer,
on one of the pylons out in the Lake. A sunny yellow is used in this
piece. For Autumn, I have a mated pair of Mallard Ducks in their fall
plumage, with sycamore tree in fall color. I use a dark green as the
accent color here.
I worked with the Lakeshore Community Center on these designs. Funding is pending for this project.
