Nursery rhymes are many children's earliest contact with literature. Origins of rhymes can be obscure, including lines from old drinking and novelty songs, doggerel, and references to historical events.

I have illustrated some very well-known rhymes and some rather more obscure. They include Molly and her sister arguing over the relative merits of coffee and tea; Little Miss Muffet; Mary, Mary quite contrary and her garden; the little girl from Pippin Hill; the black hen who lays eggs for gentlemen; Little Tommy Tucker's Dog; and the balloon that has flown to the moon.
