The mermaid is an iconic figure in folklore.
Usually beautiful, they are often searching for love, or trying to
attain a human soul. Yearning, they are frequently sad. Related to
selkies and other sea-folk such as neriads, they often symbolize the
unconscious. This mermaid has surfaced off the Monterey coast.
